Opportunity To Raise Awareness: A new scheme has been launched by O2 in the UK to implement an eco-rating system for mobile phone devices from various manufacturers. O2 found that the greenness of a phone will have influence on the buying decisions of 44% of their customers. The ranking scheme of O2 will include 93% of the mobile phones used by its customers, according to the Guardian. Gareth Rice, O2's head of environment said, "We see this as very much an opportunity to raise their awareness, and engage them in the sustainability agenda." He further added "When we set this out we did hope it would show our supply base that sustainability matters to us too."
Apple Excluded From The Scheme: The scheme rates phones are based on the environmental impact of factors like manufacturing, packaging, energy efficiency and recyclable. The manufacturers taking part in the scheme includes HTC, LG, Nokia, Palm, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. Each device gets points from zero to five based on 63 questions provided to manufacturers. The Sony Ericsson Elm is the most earth-friendly phone available from O2, according to the mobile operator`s new sustainability ranking and Apple refuses to take part in the new environmental ranking scheme. Gareth Rice said, "We'd be delighted if Apple joined us, but it's early days yet."
