Ofcom Sets Deadline for Mobile Network Swaps

 Transfer Number To Another Network: 

Ofcom has announced that the mobile customers will be able to transfer their existing phone number to another network within one working day. The new regulations will come into force on 11 April 2011. Currently a mobile operator is permitted to take 2 working days before allowing a departing customermobile network swaps to "port" their number to their new operator. Ofcom initially attempted to provide, but lost a court challenge from Vodafone, O2 and Orange in 2008.

New Guidelines:

The new regulations state that a PAC code must be issued to a customer upon request straight away over the phone or via a text message within 2 hours. This will end the practice of some PACs being sent out by post, forcing customers to wait several days before changing to a new operator. Ofcom Chief Executive, Ed Richards, said: “Ensuring consumers can switch between communications providers by removing unnecessary barriers is one of Ofcom’s priorities for 2010/11. Being able to switch quickly and easily between mobile providers is an important part of healthy and effective competition.”
